How to Close a Shopify Store: Cancel Your Plan Step by Step

Closing your Shopify store starts in Settings → Plan, where you can cancel your subscription and schedule your store’s deactivation. You must be logged in as the store owner to complete the process.

This guide explains how to close a Shopify store, what to check before canceling, and which charges may need separate attention.

How to Cancel Your Shopify Store

Follow these steps in your Shopify admin:

  1. Open Settings → Plan.
  2. Select Cancel plan, or Cancel trial if you’re still on a free trial.
  3. Review the available options and choose Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Select your reason for closing, then continue.
  6. Enter your password and confirm the cancellation.

Shopify sends a confirmation email. For a paid plan, your store deactivates at the end of the current billing cycle. If you use Shopify Plus, contact Shopify Plus Support to arrange cancellation.

What to Do Before Closing Your Shopify Store

A little preparation makes it easier to wrap up your business and keep the records you need.

Save Your Store Records

Export important store information and download a backup of your theme before losing admin access. Keep these files somewhere you can access independently of Shopify.

Resolve Outstanding Orders

Review unfulfilled orders, refunds, preorders, subscriptions, and unused gift cards. Closing the storefront doesn’t resolve existing customer commitments.

Check App Subscriptions and Domain Renewals

Apps are automatically uninstalled when you cancel, and pending charges are collected. However, subscriptions billed directly by outside providers need separate review.

Domain renewals also aren’t automatically canceled. Turn off renewal if you no longer want the domain, or arrange a transfer if you want to keep a Shopify-managed domain.

Export Billing and Payout History

Save your billing and payout records. Pending Shopify Payments payouts continue after deactivation, but resolving payout problems may require reopening the store.

Review Shopify’s billing considerations before closing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I temporarily pause my Shopify store?

Yes. Shopify’s Pause and Build option disables checkout while allowing you to keep working on your store for a reduced monthly fee. App charges may continue.

Does closing a Shopify store stop all charges?

It ends your Shopify subscription at the end of the billing cycle. External subscriptions, domain renewals, outstanding charges, and chargebacks may still apply. Shopify billing guidance

Can I reopen my Shopify store later?

Shopify guarantees retention of your store information for two years after deactivation, allowing you to reopen during that period. Deactivation does not immediately erase your store data. Shopify reactivation guidance
